RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

APRIL 24

On this date in 1916, 101 years ago today, the Easter Rising (sometimes called the Easter Rebellion) took place in Ireland - mostly in Dublin.  It lasted for a week.  Irish Republicans were revolting against British rule and endeavoring to establish an independent Irish Republic.  (This day was the day after Easter that year)

The British had the rebels outnumbered sixteen to one and had a huge advantage in weapons.  Over 480 people were killed and over 2600 wounded.  The British army put down the rebellion but killed many civilians and leveled parts of the City of Dublin.

In the aftermath of the rebellion, the British sent over 1800 men to interment camps in England and Wales.  Captured leaders were tried and put to death.

It was during these events that many Irish, who had been sympathetic, turned against the British.   From out of it grew the young men who would lead the fight against British rule for the next century.
