. . . there are 26 letters in our English language alphabet but there are effectively more in other languages built on Latin? Here's what I mean. In English, we make you remember whether a letter 'c' is soft or hard (cell vs call). In French, they put a little hook (cedilla) underneath the letter 'c' to let you know it is soft. In German, they stick a sideways colon (umlaut) over vowels to tell you how to pronounce them. In Spanish, you can find acute marks (') and umlauts all over the place to help with pronunciation.
. . . one of the very oldest jokes I remember hearing cannot be used any more? It went like this: "Did you know that the Reds can't sell beer at the ballpark this year? They lost the opener!" When I was a kid the only way to open a beer was with an opener.
. . . you have until April 18th to get your income tax return posted this year? No, I haven't started working on mine yet.
. . . there is no such thing as a morning dove? It is a mourning dove. No, I don't know why it's mourning. All they ever tell me is coo coo coo.
