CINCINNATI

Happy Mothers Day.

Here is a man my mother swooned over when she was a young girl:  The handsome leading man and Hollywood actor Tyrone Power.

Power was born here in Cincinnati in 1914 to a family with a tradition of acting and stage presence.   He attended Purcell High School in Walnut Hills as did numerous important Americans - like me, for instance.  After his graduation in 1931, he did some stage acting in New York.  In 1936, he went to Hollywood seeking work in films.  He was almost an instant success.

He starred in both action adventure films and romantic comedies.  In 1942, he joined the military service for the remainder of World War II serving as a Marine pilot.  Afterward, he returned to Hollywood and starred in several films every year until 1958.  That year, while filming on location in Madrid, Power had a heart attack and died at the age of 44.    His son, Tyrone IV. was born two months after his untimely death.  No man had more starring rolls during the early 1950s than Tyrone Power - another Cincinnati product.
