What, you never heard of Martha? The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is famous worldwide for having many unique births and deaths. One of these was the last - the very last - passenger pigeon in the world. Martha was her name. She died September 1, 1914. It is believed the last wild passenger pigeon was shot in 1901.
They were everywhere on this continent when the Europeans started moving here. Soon their habitat was destroyed by the encroachment of people, many were killed because they ate crops and, sadly, their good taste also did them in - poor people liked to eat them.
So, give it up for Martha - another who makes Cincinnati famous.
