CINCINNATI

The Carew Tower in the center of downtown Cincinnati was the tallest building in the city from it's completion in 1930 until the Great American Tower was completed in 2010.  Carew Tower stands 49 stories and 574 feet tall.  It was a model for the Empire State Building in New York City which was completed a year later.

Developer John J. Emery named the tower was named after Joseph T. Carew, owner of the Mabley and Carew department stores, who died in 1914.  A Mabley and Carew store stood on the location before the tower was built and occupied the lower levels of the completed high rise.

Construction began a month before the stock market crash of 1929.  By working around the clock, 24/7, the building was completed in 13 months.  The building is an Art Deco masterpiece; full of murals, carvings, special tile work, sculptures and metalwork.  Today, Carew Tower is home to the Hilton Netherland Plaza Hotel.

From the tower's observation deck, you can see into three states on a clear day.  You can, I would never.  I like to keep my feet closer to the ground.
