RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

CINCINNATI

Price Hill is an area of Cincinnati's west side.  It is actually three communities called West, East and Lower Price Hill.  Named after Rees Price, a railway executive and entrepreneur, who moved there in the early 19th century and developed much of the land.  The locals originally called it Price's Hill.  He was instrumental in building an incline so that people had access to and from the downtown area.

Because of the terrain, Price Hill was a difficult area to reach in the early days of the Cincinnati settlement.  The area became popular when the city was a hub of the meat packing industry.  Large stockyards and meat processing plants dotted the valley that was Cincinnati.  Those that could afford it, moved to much higher ground - Price Hill on the west side - where they could breathe.  The area was originally populated with mostly German and Irish Catholic immigrants.

It is still an inside joke among locals that roadway access to and from the west side is somewhat limited.  Many think that those growing up there - never leave.  There is some truth in it.
