Jamaica is an independent island country in the Caribbean Sea. Once a territory of the United Kingdom, it gained it's independence in 1962. It was originally a Spanish possession. The Spaniards brought in African slaves to work the farms - mostly sugar cane - for them. The British captured the island in 1655 and dispersed the slaves. Mostly Irish settlers arrived after the British take-over.
Today, the island is about 70% protestant christian with the Church of God being the largest denomination. Here are the words to the country's national anthem. It is certainly a prayer.
Eternal Father bless our land
guard us with thy mighty hand
keep us free from evil powers
be our light through countless hours.
To our leaders, Great Defender,
grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, truth be ours forever
Jamaica, land we love,
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love
Teach us true respect for all
stir response to duty's call
strengthen us the weak to cherish
give us vision lest we perish.
Knowledge send us Heavenly Father
grant true wisdom from above.
Justice, Truth be ours forever
Jamaica, land we love
Jamaica, Jamaica, Jamaica land we love
