RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

WHEN I WAS A KID

I had a memory the other day that brought a smile to my face.  About the time I first got my driver's license, 1961, a lot of people were putting search lights on their cars.  Police cruisers in our area had them.  They were used to light up a dark accident scene or directed at houses to determine a house number.  The lights were mounted just outside the drivers side window attached to the frame along side the windshield.  The search lights had a handle on them and they were on a swivel so that from inside the car, one could direct the light in whatever direction necessary.

The funny part is that young people started mounting these search lights on their cars.  The main idea that I can remember was for use at the drive-in theater.  Between shows, when the screen went black while changing the reels of film, people would shine their lights on the screen.  First one and then another chasing the first around the screen.  It was great fun for everyone.  At one point, the Twin Drive-In even had a moving dot projected on the screen that those with the lights would chase around.

If you think all this sounds ridiculous, join the crowd.  Our entertainment was simple in those days.
