RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

11/13/2017

NOVEMBER 13

On this date in 1947 in The Soviet Union, the Automatic Kalashnikov was introduced.  It is the rifle commonly called the AK-47.   Its basic design is one of the most enduring of any product in the world.  It is light, efficient and deadly - easy to manufacture, clean and use - it almost never fails to operate.  This design is still, 70 years later, the choice of armies, hunters and terrorists.

Not until the late 1960s, did the U.S. military introduce it's equivalent ( called the M-16) to troops in Vietnam.  American manufacturers now offer to consumers the AR-15 which is the same basic structure as the military M-16.  Each has it's roots with the AK-47 - designed in Russia and released 70 years ago today.
