RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

DECEMBER 18

On this date in 1958, the U.S. launched a satellite from Cape Canaveral into space atop an Atlas rocket in a program called Project Score.  This was the world's very first communications satellite.  It was an active relay satellite which received and resent messages from Earth - back to Earth.  In the eyes of many, it brought the U.S. up to a technological par with the Soviet Union which launched it's Sputnik satellite the year before.

Today, there are over 200 communications satellites in orbit.  They relay radio, television, telephone and military coded signals around the world every minute of the day.  The Project Score satellite was an important building block in this 'age of technology'. . . 59 years ago today.
