How unsanitary is a stable? It is warm with the body heat of animals and maybe by a fire - but the smoke of a fire is hard to breathe. I hope the weather is mild.
Clean out the feed from one of the mangers from which the cattle eat and put in clean hay - as clean as you can find. We'll need somewhere for the baby to lie while we sleep.
How helpless is a baby? Tear strips of cloth from a robe to swaddle the babe. He falls asleep to what sounds like singing from above.
He'll live exclusively on mother's milk for six months or more. After that, maybe these shepherds will give us some goat or lambs milk.
It's a boy. Go to the temple and find a rabbi, he must be circumcised on the eighth day.
