WEEKEND LITURGY

DEUTERONOMY 18:15-20     PSALM 95     1 COR 7:32-35     MARK 1:21-28

This weekend the readings make me think of teachers.  Moses speaks to his people and tells them that another would come to be their prophet or teacher.  Paul takes his best shot at teaching the people of Corinth what is important in life and how they should handle it.  In Mark's gospel, we hear of Jesus going to the Temple and teaching.  He taught not like the usual scribes but with a real authority.  He even cast out demons as proof of his authority.

We have all had teachers;  at home, in school, at play, at work, and at church.  Some teach with authority and others, not so much.  Our parents were our first teachers.  You are blessed if they spoke with real moral authority.

But, the older we are, the more skeptical we become.  Each year, it is more difficult to accept blindly the words of others.  That is good.  Let us choose wisely those to whom we listen and those we follow.   Not everyone on a soapbox or everyone with a pulpit or almost anyone with the power of celebrity is teaching properly.  It is right to discriminate.

And, yes, that includes bloggers.
