On this date in 1934, the United Kingdom introduced an automobile driver's test in order to receive a license.
In the United States, registration and license plates were introduced in 1910 by the State of New York. By 1918, all states required license plates on motor vehicles. A chance to make money for the states.
Individual driver's licenses came later. In the U.S., only a little more than half the states required a license to drive before 1935 and most of those didn't require a test. Today, in South Dakota, you can get a license when you are 14 years old. In New Jersey, you must wait until you are 17.
