MARCH 5

BE CAREFUL WITH WHOM YOU SLEEP

On this date in 1940, Joseph Stalin and other leaders of the Politburo - the ruling body of Soviet Russia - authorized what became known as the Katyn Massacre.  The Russians, a year later our ally in World War II, murdered more than 22,000 Polish citizens who they considered dangerous because they were educated.  Teachers, writers, priests, policemen, military officers, lawyers, factory owners and city officials were singled out and shot dead. One of the most egregious crimes of genocide in the history of the world.

In 1941, during World War II, mass graves were discovered by the Germans in the Katyn Forest of Poland.  The Russians tried to throw the blame for the atrocity onto the Germans but, finally, in the 1990 the Soviet Union admitted Russian guilt.  The Soviet Union, however, refused to admit that it was a war crime and all perpetrators being dead, no remuneration was made to Poland.  In 2010, Russia released a formal declaration blaming Stalin and other leaders at the time for personally ordering the slaughter.
