Have you heard of Albert Hofmann? He was a Swiss scientist. On this date in 1943, he accidentally discovered that a chemical compound with which he was working caused hallucinogenic effects. The compound was lysergic acid diethylamide - commonly known as LSD. Not only was he the first to synthesize it, three days later he took a full dose under the watchful eye of his companions. He continued to take doses of it the rest of his life and died trying to find a good use for the drug other than it's psychedelic effects - he lived to be 102.
