RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

MAY 14

On this date in 1939, a Peruvian girl named Lina Medina gave birth by caesarean section to a healthy 6 lb baby boy.  What's the big deal, you ask.  Lina was five years, seven months and 21 days old.  You heard me.  Five years old.  It is the youngest known birth in the world.

The son lived for 40 years; he died in 1979.  Lina, who refuses interviews, is still alive - she is 79 this year.  She is married and has had another son with her husband.  The father of her first son has never been determined - at the time they had no way of determining responsibility.

Lina had undergone what is called precosious puberty - puberty prior to the age of eight.  It is a cross for a child to bear.

I guess that all children want to age more quickly - they shouldn't.  Everyone my age is trying to halt the process.  The circle of life.
