RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

WEEKEND LITURGY

This weekend we hear a gospel written by Mark that includes a tow sample parables.  Mark notes that Jesus almost always taught the masses using parables - but he explained things to his apostles.  What's the deal with that?

Parables are stories taken from ordinary life with subjects like housekeeping, farming and animal husbandry.   It was a storytelling method used by some of the Old Testament authors.

Parables are meant to be discussed.  In many, you will find an obvious or superficial meaning but, upon further review, you can find deeper meaning.   This teaching in parables brings us to one of the real values of our clergy.  It is for them to discern this deeper meaning.  It is for them to discern additional meaning.  And, how to we receive this from them?  At mass!  Each week - a good homily will bring you to think and learn.  Jesus knew this would be the case.  If you search for greater knowledge of God (and you should), Church is the place.
