RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

In 1900, California was having trouble attracting settlers onto the land in the southeastern part of the state.  It was a desolate area but it did have possibilities.  The land bordering the Colorado River was inexpensive and could be good for farming.  The California Land Company was at a loss to figure out how to get it settled.

One man came up with a great idea.  He started a new sales firm called the Imperial Land Company.  He named the land the Imperial Valley.  That brought in the customers.  How could you go wrong?

This story reminds me of the two island countries Greenland and Iceland.  As the story goes, Greenland is just a big block of ice that is almost uninhabitable.  The founders called it Greenland to attract people to it.  There is very little 'green' there.

Iceland is a smaller island with climate as good or better than the Scandinavian countries.  The founders called it Iceland to keep visitors away.  They had a good thing and didn't want to share it.  There is very little 'ice' there.

Does your name fit you?
