WEEKEND LITURGY

This Sunday's gospel is the famous one by John known as the "loaves and fishes" miracle.

My dad was the youngest of 12 - mostly brothers.  As teenage boys on Mount Adams, his big brothers gave him a bad example.  Dad's mother was a sickly widow when he was maturing and she always sent the boys off to church each Sunday.  The older boys would sometimes skip and end up in Eden Park playing around or gambling with dice.  They were smart enough to return home about the time mass would be over.  Mom would quiz the boys about the service when they got home.  Dad swore that every week they would tell her that the gospel was the one about the loaves and fishes.  It is a well known story.

It really was a miracle for Jesus to feed this large throng of people.  The message from Jesus was deeper than that one event.  "His way" will feed . . . everyone.   Everyone hungers.  You only need to ask.  Life is so much more difficult if you try to do it by yourself.
