One hundred years ago today, 39 year-old Opha Mae Johnson made news. She sure did. She became the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. She was placed in the Marine Corp Reserves and served for two years.
That same day in Germany, Bayensche Motoren Werke went public. You could now buy stock in the company which became better known as BMW. During World War II, they made airplane engines, vehicle engines and motorcycles for the Axis countries. Today they specialize in luxury automobiles.
