Some Israelites fled to Egypt when there was a famine in their land. The main group which was the family of Jacob included about 70 people and flocks of sheep. There may have been another family or two already there. God promised Jacob He would bring them back to their land when the time was right. When the famine reached Egypt, the Egyptians captured the Israelites, took their animals and used them as slaves.
How long were they enslaved in Egypt? Maybe four generations; maybe 540 years as I heard a priest estimate; maybe 430 years as I read in Exodus; some think as few as 275 years. It doesn't really matter - it was a long time.
When Moses sprung the Israelites from captivity in Egypt, how many were there? My Bible says, 600,000 men over 20 plus women and children. Pretty prolific bunch to go from 70 to somewhere around 1,000,000 people. That is a whole lot of people crossing the Red Sea knowing they took along some non-Israelis and many animals.
This horde of people wondered around in the desert for the next 40 years - how many were they when they got to the Promised Land? Do the math! A whole lot - a nation!
