SEPTEMBER 17

On this date in 1862, the Battle of Antietam was fought.  Sometimes called the Battle of Sharpsburg, it is one you should never forget.

Why, you ask?  Here are the stats.

American military deaths attributed to war:

Afghanistan  -  2,200
Spanish-American War  -  2,300
Philippine-American War  -  4,200
Iraq War  -  4,500
Mexican-American War  -  13,300
War of 1812  -  15,000
American Revolutionary War  -  25,000
Korean War  -  54,200
Vietnam War  -  58,200
World War I  -  116,500
World War II  -  405,400
American Civil War  -  750,000

And why does this one battle require our remembering it?  On that day, 156 years ago today, over 22,700 Americans lost their lives - the bloodiest day for America on any day, in any war.  On that one day, we lost more men than we have in half the wars we've fought.
May they rest in peace.
