RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

SEPTEMBER 3

LABOR DAY!

As you know, in the U.S. we drive our cars on the right side of the roadway.  In Great Britain and many countries Britain once possessed drive cars on the left side of the road.  Most of the world drives on the right.

I came across an amazing fact.  The country of Sweden once drove on the left side but changed to the right.  Their neighboring countries already drove on the right.  When people drove across the border from one country to the other, head-on crashes occurred.  How did they ever let that go on?

Anyway, the change for Sweden happened on this date in 1967.  Can you imagine?  At a certain time of the day, everyone had to switch to the other side of the road.  All over the country, signage had to be changed, intersections repainted, traffic signals moved, bus stops relocated, new signs installed . . . it's not easy driving on a side of the road with which you're not familiar.  Many cars had steering wheels now on the wrong side.  What a massive undertaking.

They say the switch went off without much of hitch.  Fifty-one years ago today!
