The City of Cleveland, Ohio, founded in 1796, was named after Moses Cleaveland. Moses was a general in the American Army of the Revolution. Cleaveland didn't really like the city and resided in Connecticut.
Did you notice the spelling? Clevelanders were incompetent from the very beginning. They lost an 'a' long before they started losing football games.
Interesting word: "cleave". Ms. Webster gives it two definitions. One definition says it means to cling to something. The second definition says it means to cut or divide something. Someone is confused.
Everyone knows the Cleveland Browns football team was named after the venerable Paul Brown. Don't believe those people who say it refers to the color of the stripe on their underpants.
Cleveland's Cuyahoga River runs south and then north so that it empties into Lake Erie. Not many rivers run north. Of course, not many rivers have caught on fire, either.
