RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

At Catholic mass this weekend, you will hear a gospel story by Mark in which Jesus teaches his apostles the lesson of "The first shall be last and the last shall be first" and more.

It seems the Apostles were arguing among themselves about their rank - who was the best - who did Jesus like the most - that sort of thing.  His message was that they shouldn't seek to be the first, the most honored - that being the servant of others is the right path to the top.  He used as an example a child - a person without rank or stature in society - a person who could not help them.  He told them not to be too good to talk to and honor this young person and further, that accepting this young person - the weakest and most vulnerable among us - is accepting Him which is accepting God.

This lesson tells us that we must live not by the standard of  'dog eat dog' or 'step on anyone to get to the top' but that we should be subservient to all.  It is a very hard lesson.  It is a very hard life to live because it goes against much of what is accepted in our society.   Good luck!
