Just in case you thought it was always there, it was on this date in 1957 that the United States began circulating paper currency with the inscription "In God We Trust". It had become the official motto of the United States the previous year. It is now also emblazoned on our coins. It replaced "E pluribus unum" which had been our motto since 1782.
It is my guess that forces in this country will soon require Congress to rethink and replace this motto. It will be a sad day.
