RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

10/22/2018

OCTOBER 22

On this date in 1966, for the first time an all-female singing group, the Supremes, had a number one selling album on the Billboard charts; Supremes A'Go-Go.  It was their ninth album.  The top single released from this album was "You Can't Hurry Love!"

The lead singer for the Supremes was Diana Ross.  In 1967, the group's name was changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes by their manager Berry Gordy.  Ross went on her own in 1970 and the group continued recording into 1977.

The Supremes were the most significant all-female singing group in history.  They dominated the Pop - Motown - R&B markets for ten years.  In the sixties, they produced number one singles with five consecutive releases.  Have you heard or remember "Baby Love", "Where Did Our Love Go", "Stop! In The Name Of Love", "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me".

The Supremes won many Grammy Awards, have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  On this date, 52 years ago, they first hit the top.  For me, they'll always be on top.
