Dick's Sporting Goods was founded by Richard 'Dick' Stack in 1948 as a fishing bait and tackle shop in Binghamton, NY. His grandmother gave him $300 to get the business going. It was Grandma's total savings which she had kept in a cookie jar.
Today, Dick's has about 850 stores and employs about 30,000 workers. Their last released financials show an income of $330,000,000 on $7,270,000,000 in sales for 2015. Dick's son Edward is the current chairman and CEO.
