Reading is one of the many suburbs of Cincinnati. It is conveniently located on Reading Road. That street spans the length of the county from the downtown area north. It is pronounced Red'-ing. Here's why.
The original landowner in the area was a man named Abraham Voorhees who located there in 1794. The second landowner was a friend of his named Harvey Redinbo. They called the community Voorheestown . . . for awhile. Yes, it was a little cumbersome - too many vowels; hard to pronounce; wouldn't fit on a standard envelope. Redinbotown wasn't any better. What to do?
Well, Mr. Redinbo was from England. He was also the son-in-law of the famous William Penn after whom the whole state of Pennsylvania was named. Mr. Penn and Mr Redinbo were both from Reading, England. Voila! Reading, Ohio.
Reading is a nice little town - full of wedding dress shops and taverns (there must be some connection). I've heard through the grapevine that they are considering another name change for the city - it might soon be called Boehnerburg.
