INTERFAITH WISDOM

Prayer is integral to the Hindu religion.  It is done mostly in the form of recitation of mantras.  A mantra can be a word or verse which can be repeated vocally or mentally - many are repeated over and over again.  Each individual can have a personal mantra which helps them to be the best they can be or, when needed, to motivate one to attain a personal goal.  Meditation, yoga and hymns are also part of the Hindu form of prayer. 

Here is a sample mantra translated to English.

O Divine Mother, 

our hearts are filled with darkness.

Please make this darkness distant from us 

and promote illumination within us.

Here is another.

O Thou existence Absolute, 

Creator of the three dimensions,

We contemplate on they divine light.

May He stimulate our intellect

and bestow upon us true knowledge.
