This weekend, the first Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading at Catholic mass is from Luke chapter 4. In essence, we are told about the first Lent.
You see, after Jesus was baptized, he was led into the desert where he stayed and fasted for forty days and nights. He was preparing for His own death and resurrection. At the end of that time, weary and hungry, He was subject to the temptations of the devil. Satan offered Him first, relief from hunger, then power and glory, and finally, a chance to show off and prove that He was God.
These temptations are similar to the ones we face all the time. It is the way the world works. Of course, hunger represents all of the excesses of the flesh. Power and glory is the aim of every man's ego. The opportunity to prove how good we are seems so natural to us. It is a challenge to be humble. Try to meet that challenge this Lenten season.
