APRIL 1

Why April fools?  Why April Fools Day?  Here's my explanation.

A long time ago, the early Romans concocted a calendar and used their emperor's names and gods names for the months of the year.   The first month was what we call March named after their great war god, Mars.  April, the second, was a Latin word, Aprilis, meaning "opening" - as in flowers open in Spring.  I won't go through them all but December refers to the number 10, dece in Latin, as the 10th month which made February the 12th.

In the 16th century, the world decided that everyone should adopt the Gregorian Calendar.  Okay, that made January the first month and December the 12th.   A good bunch of the bozos who didn't get the news or rejected it, still continued with their celebration of March as the 1st month and their big year-end celebration was during the last week of March ending on April 1st.   What fools they were.

Yes, what fools these mortals be.  The sentiment caught on and April 1st became known as All Fools Day.  Play some tricks on a fool this day - it's all right.  But not on me - I'm sensitive.
