The Japanese Yen is the third most traded currency in the world. The Yen currently trades with the US Dollar at about ¥99 (JPY or Japanese Yen) equals one dollar. So, $100 is about the same as ¥9,900 and ¥1 is only a little more than a penny in our money.
In Japan, you can carry coins that are 1¥, 5¥, 10¥, 50¥, 100¥, 500¥. Paper Yens come in denominations like ¥1,000, ¥5,000 and ¥10,000.
As you can see, Japanese kids have to learn much larger numbers than American kids. Maybe that's an advantage for them.
