A Cincinnati high school team recently won the Division 1 (big schools) state championship and got little notice. Part of that was because it was a girls team. Most of that is because it was in the sport of rugby. Yes, girls highs school rugby. Walnut Hills High School won State by clobbering a northern team 44 - 19. Amazing!
Okay, from what I wrote last Friday you might think I dislike rugby - it's not true. Okay, if you know me you might think I really don't like girls sports much - it's not true. Okay, very few high schools in Ohio play rugby - even fewer on the girls end of it. I think Moeller and St. X may be the only schools fielding a boys team. Okay, rugby at Walnut Hills is a club sport. All this aside, it's really neat that they are playing and did so well.
As for rugby, watch out - it is coming to a field near you. Teams are springing up around the state at all levels from youth through high school; from full squads to sevens; from standard field to sand fields.. Its an inexpensive sport to field which makes it good for schools. I'm thinking there is a great need for experienced coaches and referees.
