At Catholic mass this weekend, you will hear a passage from Luke's Gospel in which he tells the story of two sisters, Martha and Mary, who lived together. Jesus stopped at their house for a visit and a meal.
Martha spent her time making and serving food to their guests and making sure everyone was comfortable. Mary, on the other hand, sat a Jesus' feet and listened to him speak.
After a little while, Martha got ticked off because Mary wasn't helping her. She asked Jesus to admonish her for not being a good hostess.
Didn't happen. Jesus shocked her by telling her to stop worrying about food and comfort. Mary was doing the right thing - concentrate on the hereafter.
It's an obvious message for us but not one we can easily follow. Why is it so hard to put the most important things first? It takes strength and confidence and single-mindedness and humility and a lot of other things, I'm sure.
Good luck! Try your best.
