Did you ever hear of a "knocker-up"? In Britain and Ireland, it was once a viable profession. There was a time when clocks, and especially alarm clocks, were not very reliable. Many people hired people known as "knocker-ups" to come wake them at a specified time. The knocker-ups carried a wooden pole that they tapped on a bedroom window. Sometimes they needed very long poles to reach second story windows. Quite a job.
