James Findlay was born in Pennsylvania in 1770 but moved to Cincinnati with his wife, Jane, when he was 23 years old. James went into business with a local man and became a mover and shaker in the growing city. He was elected to the legislature of the Northwest Territory in 1798 and became the U.S. Marshall of the Territory in 1802.
He served four one year terms as mayor of Cincinnati. All the while, he was very active in the Ohio Militia. In the War of 1812, he served with the U.S. Army as commander of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He reached the rank of Major General in the Ohio Militia and, north of Dayton, built Fort Findlay which has blossomed into the City of Findlay, Ohio.
From 1825 to 1833, he served as a U.S. Representative to Congress. Findlay lost in his bid to become Governor in 1834 and sought no further public office. He died in 1835.
The land upon which Findlay Market resides was donated to the City by the estate of the late - great Cincinnatian and his wife. James Findlay - Cincinnatian! rests in Spring Grove Cemetery.
