At Catholic mass this weekend the word is "signs". In the first reading, the Prophet Isaiah enumerates the things that will happen when the Lord comes. The blind will see, the deaf will hear, the lame will leap like a deer and the mute will sing. Those who the Lord has saved will enter into heaven singing, crowned with joy, joy and gladness will push out the sadness and sorrow.
In the new testament reading, James explains that we must be patient like the farmer who waits for the harvest. He tells us to pay attention to the prophets, like Isaiah above, who have given us signs. Do the right things and it will happen in time.
Matthew, in his gospel, tells a story about John the Baptist - the second time we have heard about John this Advent. In it, John is in jail. He sends some friends to find the one called Jesus with instructions to ask him if he is the one; if he is the promised Messiah. Jesus responds to them like this: look at the signs which my works produce; the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the good news is preached to the poorest of the poor. His answer to their question in so many words, "Who else would I be, with all these miracles about me, if not the Messiah?"
Ask yourself, who else could he be? Follow him!
Have a blessed weekend!
