On this date in 1857, Elisha Otis installed his first elevator in New York City. Otis didn't invent the elevator, he invented a safety device that prevented the elevator from falling to the basement when the lifting cables gave way.
The Otis Elevator Company was founded in 1853 and still today produces a revenue of greater than $12 billion annually. They took the risk out of going up in the world - 163 years ago today..
