My spouse lived for a few of her early years on a farm on the hill above New Richmond, Ohio just east of Cincinnati. They lived in the farmhouse and enjoyed the lifestyle while not actually farming the land. The land was once owned by the Meier's family and produced Catawba grapes.
Meier's purchased land in the Kenwood, Ohio area just north of Cincinnati and let the New Richmond land go to farming. They developed vineyards on the land now occupied by the Kenwood Mall shopping center. They were called the Meier's Grape Juice Company.
Meier's has been bottling grape drinks for 125 years. Only after the end of Prohibition in 1938, did they delve into making alcoholic beverages from their grapes. Most of their crops are now grown on Bass Island in northern Ohio.
Not long after we were married, my wife's parents moved to the Silverton, Ohio area. Wouldn't you know it, just a short walk to the current location of Meier's Wine Cellar. It's not far south of Kenwood.
Meier's is now the largest wine producer in the State of Ohio. They specialize in sweet desert and table wines. Their specialty is the one they call #44 Cream Sherry. Meier's still makes many non-alcoholic juices as well. They are a bright spot in the Cincinnati landscape. Their store and tasting area is open Tuesdays thru Saturday in the afternoon and evening.
