At Catholic mass this weekend, you will hear from Luke's gospel, an account of two men traveling on the road to Emmaus, who were visited by the risen Jesus. They did not recognize him as they walked along. Not until they sat to eat together did they become aware. At the blessing before the meal, they realized who he was.
This is not the only occasion after rising from the dead that Jesus encountered some of his disciples and they did not recognize him until he blessed the bread. Let me explain something here about that.
To this day, it is Jewish custom to pray over the table, wine and bread before eating the Sabbath meal. During Catholic mass, we do the same during the Offertory. The prayers are similar. Jesus would have said simply, "Blessed are you, Lord our God, Sovereign of all, who hallows us with laws, commanding us to light the candles for Sabbath. Blessed are you, Lord our God, Sovereign of all, creator of the fruit of the vine. Blessed are you, Lord our God, Sovereign of all, who brings forth bread from the earth." This short prayer before eating enlightened the disciples that it was Jesus.
Think about saying a blessing before your meals. It's a wonderful habit.
Think about this story while at mass. You will hear almost the same words. Let your mind be opened to Jesus when you hear them. Take down your guard this week - let His Spirit enter.
