CINCINNATI

The first house I purchased was in Colerain Township - northwest of the Cincinnati city center - in Hamilton County.  An adjoining community was called Groesbeck.  I ran across that name the other day when reading something on the Civil War.

General Joseph Hooker, who I mentioned in a "THIS N THAT" entry, took command of the Northern Department (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois) on  October 1, 1864.  The headquarters for that department of the Army was located in Cincinnati at that time.  He was here until the war ended in April of 1865.

While Hooker was here, he married a lady named Olivia Groesbeck.  She was the daughter of a U.S. Congressman.  Hooker was laid to rest in Cincinnati's Spring Grove Cemetery.

In Business Week's November 2007 edition, Groesbeck was named one of the 50 best places in the country to raise children.
