CINCINNATI

Whoever said, "It's not what you know but who you know." was not completely right.  It should be "It's not what you know but who you know it about."

There is a bridge spanning the Ohio River between downtown Cincinnati and downtown Covington, Kentucky that carries US Rt 25, US Rt 42 and US Rt 127.  It sits adjacent to the C&O railroad bridge and has a nice pedestrian walk included.  It is called the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge.

Who the heck was Clay Wade Bailey?  Well, he was a newspaper reporter and journalist.  He worked from an office in Frankfort, the Kentucky state capital, for several papers at different times including the Louisville Courier- Journal and the Kentucky Post.  It's said he got to know everyone in Kentucky government right up to each governor in his 40+ years working span.

Governor Louie Nunn announced in 1973 that the new bridge would carry his name.  Sadly, Mr. Bailey suffered a stroke and died in 1974 about eight months before the bridge was opened.

Could there be another major bridge in the world named after a newspaper reporter?  I doubt it.  What an honor.
