CINCINANTI

The last three Sundays we have talked about the US Navy ships named after Cincinnati.  One from the Civil War, one in the Spanish-American War and one in World War II.  Now comes a new age a different type of ship.

In 1974, construction began on another USS Cincinnati. It was a Los Angeles-Class submarine - that is one that is nuclear powered and equipped for fast attack.  It was launched in 1977 from is birthplace, Newport News, VA.  It literally circled the globe during it's service time.

About half of the 62 Los Angeles-Class subs have been decommissioned and scrapped including the Cincinnati in 1996.  Her nuclear reactor was sent to Washington State for disposal.  An attempt to acquire the sub as a tourist attraction by the city failed but there is still hope some parts of it can be brought here for display on the riverfront.
