RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

Just last weekend, we honored all the Saints and those others who have died. You will hear, at Catholic mass this weekend, readings about the end times, death, and our need to prepare and always be ready.  This will be the norm for the next three weekends.   These are the last three weeks of the liturgical calendar - we have four weeks until the first Sunday of Advent.

The first reading is from the Book of Wisdom - it personifies Wisdom.  Wisdom is what (who) we should seek - a worthy spouse.  Remember the story of Solomon - the king who sought wisdom instead of riches.  Let that be us.

Next we hear a part of Paul's letter to some of his followers.  In it, he affirms the after-life.  He encouraged all to be strong and not lose faith - to believe that those who have gone are in a better place, if God has taken them in.  We must believe that also.

Finally, in a reading from Matthew's Gospel, we hear a parable Jesus used to instruct his followers about death.  The message is simple.  Be prepared.  Don't wait until the end.  We know not when He will come.  As sure as Jesus died and then went to his Father, so we will have that opportunity.  Be prepared.  Nothing on this Earth is more important.
