MIDWEEK PRAYER

Big day today - no, I didn't mean one month until St. Patrick's Day.  This is Ash Wednesday; the first day of the Lenten Season.  These are the 40 days plus Sundays before Easter.  It is a time of repentance and sacrifice;  all this in preparation for our remembrance of the passion and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

From the book of Genesis, God said to Adam, "thou art dust and to dust you shall return."  It was a curse on us all for Adam's disobedience; the original sin.  The traditional sign of repentance was the wearing of sackcloth and ashes.  Today, Christians will wear those ashes for one day.

I hope my prayer is fitting.

Lord Jesus,
I pray you walk with me these forty days.
Put your arm around my shoulder
and guide me toward your home.
Give me a tug
when it looks like I'll turn the wrong way
and a push
when it looks like I won't do the good I could.
Place your other hand
over my mouth
to remind me to speak with kindness
or over my eyes
to remind me to follow you blindly
and pull me from all my personal weaknesses.
Amen
