RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

At Catholic mass this weekend, you will hear the most powerful of readings.  The gospel reading is Mark's version of the Transfiguration.  The Apostles, Peter, James and John were given a small glimpse of Heaven.

The new testament reading is from Paul's letter to the Romans in which he professes the crux of the religion;  "If God is for us, who could be against us?"  This God sacrificed his son for us and, like any father, could give us no greater gift.

Paul's letter was a reflection of the story in Genesis.  This Old Testament reading is the bombshell for me.  God told Abraham to kill his own son as a sacrifice to God himself.  This was his only son, Isaac, who he loved immensely.  Abraham was going to do it.  He laid the boy on an alter he made and took his knife in his hand to kill him -  just because God asked him to do it.  Holy smoke!  I can't imagine this.  I have a son.  I'm sorry, I could not do it.  This test would be too harsh.

Luckily, we will not be asked to make a choice so deadly.  But, we are asked to make choices.  Every day, we make choices.  Be guided by God's will - let it be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Have a great weekend.  God bless you and keep you.  I love you.
