RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

THE WORD THIS WEEKEND

This weekend the Catholic Church celebrates Palm Sunday.  We once called it Passion Sunday because the "Passion of our Lord" is read.  It's the whole story of Christ's death.  Come listen.  It's longer than the normal Gospel selection but not that long.  Relax and imagine the scene.  Try to get the overall, overriding implication to it all.

Take some time this week to think about it.  The Passover dinner with friends.  The scene in the garden where Jesus is arrested.  The guards whipping him tied to a post.  The mat of thorny vines the guards fashioned into a crown and pressed down on his head.  Jews screaming 'kill him' like a capital criminal.  Jesus dragging the tree trunk to a spot up on a hill outside the city.  Large nails making a cross beam and then driven through his hands and feet.  His mother crying on the ground before him.  What we call 'life' leaving his body.

This coming Thursday, the Last Supper will be commemorated.  On Friday, the actual death of Jesus.

God bless you.  Have a great weekend.  I love you.
