20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is an incorrect translation of the title of the 1870 French novel by Jules Verne. It should have been 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas. You see, Leagues refers to distance traveled and not depth. 20,000 leagues takes you all over the Earth under water. A league is about 17 miles.
