The word this weekend at Catholic mass is SEED. In Mark's gospel, he refers to two of Jesus' parables having to do with seeds. Mark is always short and to the point. This week is no exception.
First he compares the formation of the kingdom of God to the planting of seed. No one back then had any really good idea what happens to make that seed germinate, then sprout, then grow, then produce - only that after they see produce they would reap. The same with God's kingdom on earth. The story was an instruction of how his church would grow; don't worry how it happened. Just spread the word (seed) and it would grow.
The second parable was an expansion of the first. It concerns the mustard seed which is very small. Not to worry. From a very small word (seed) would grow the largest of kingdoms (trees).
And all this was an instruction to His disciples (and now an instruction to us) to spread the word. That's what we should all do - spread the word. Don't be embarrassed by it; don't be shy. Spread the word. Share the Good News.
